Hello one and all,
Things have been a little quiet on here recently, mostly due to general circumstances as well as beavering away on several projects – so I thought it would be a perfect time to give an update on all of the things I’ve been working on.
Hope of Sol – Story rework
Hope of Sol is in a good state. The story itself has undergone some rework, mostly surrounding the ending itself, but the bulk of the story has remained the same. As such, this has pushed back some of the work, but I feel it will be worth it.
The new ending came to me a month or so after penning the original ending I had planned, and it hit me so hard in the gut I just had to use it. Let’s just say, it’s going to be a bittersweet way to finish the series – in a good way, of course!
The Gamekeeper – edits occurring
As from my previous updates, The Gamekeeper is written in its entirety. I am currently working through edits; cleaning up the prose, fixing any loose ends, and generally polishing it to within an inch of its life. I’m happy with the story, and I think it’s going to really come together nicely by the end of the year (if not sooner…)
This is my first post-apocalyptic novel, so a lot of research and time have gone into the story and surrounding world. Most of the time, the apocalypse focuses on America, but I’ve centered this one around a broken and fractured United Kingdom (or not so united, in this case). It’s going to be dark, but as always there is light at the end of the tunnel.
As some of you may know, I’ve lent my voice to a number of productions in a voice-acting capacity. One of these was released the other day – ‘Sink With Me’. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Peter and the team on this, you can listen to the entire thing for free below. It’s a short science fiction/steampunk story, in which I play the part of Howard; a synthetic submariner aboard the Farragut. Think David crossed with Data.
What I’ve been reading
Of course, what use is it to write without reading?
Recently I’ve been catching up on some new and not-so-new science fiction. First up, I’ve recently finished Gareth L. Powell’s ‘Embers of War’. All I can say about this is – go read it. There are great characters, great world-building, and some of the best exploration of alien infrastructure I’ve read since ‘Rendezvous With Rama’
Secondly, I happened to come across a copy of ‘Childhood’s End’ by Arthur C. Clarke. It was 50p, so for that price I really couldn’t say no. It really is an outstanding slice of science fiction, highly recommended.
After this, I’m going to start hitting up the fantasy again. I’ve got the First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie to tackle next, and I’m really looking forward to it.
Hopefully, this has been another update worth reading for you. I’ll continue to publish my short stories on here, and the next larger update should be when The Gamekeeper is ready for release. Don’t forget, if you want to contact me for any reason, you can get me here or on twitter.
Until then, read on.
